John Arfuso - Meet Mr. "A" and his Family
Short Bio:B.S Hotel Administration - U.N.L.V. 12/83
MBA - Marketing - U.N.L.V. 8/04
I wasn't born and raised here, but, I still call myself a native. I have lived in Las Vegas since 1967 and I have watched this town grow from 100,000 people to what it is today. I am a product of CCSD and Nevada's University system. Being a teacher is a second career for me. Initially, as a young man, I managed the businesses of others. All of my work experience is management related. I have run hotels and restaurants, at both the M.G.M. Grand and for the Boyd Group. That said, I hated the countless hours for minimal pay. That prompted me to jump at the chance of being my own boss and make the decisions that count. In 1983, I opened a service station along the 95 corridor. I successfully operated that business until 2004. I had to give up my amazing career to accommodate the widening of the 95 freeway. The state of Nevada took my land via eminent domain in order to benefit the greater good of the citizens of Las Vegas. It was a shock to my system, having worked all my life, I now found myself unemployed. I tried being retired for four years and found that I started to become "soft between the ears" Retirement just wasn't for me.
I always had a knack for teaching people. As an entrepreneur, I had to "teach" those that I employed. I really enjoyed the satisfaction of watching my employees do things that I had taught them. I sought my teaching license, taught as a substitute for a year to test the waters, and found that I really enjoyed watching the light bulbs go off with the students I taught. I applied for a position at ECTA in their first year of operation and was hired on the spot. In my second year, I transferred to NWCTA which was much closer to my home. The Career & Technical Academy atmosphere really challenged me. I had to work hard to hone my skills as a teacher. The young minds of NWCTA made me perfect my craft.
In 2013, I transferred to Desert Pines H.S to work for my former principal from NWCTA. I currently am the Magnet Program lead for the Sports & Entertainment Marketing Program. I love the students and plan on finishing out my career at DPHS.
